Dr. Okonkwo was inspired to start a non-profit from his time on the Humphrey Fellowship, where he learned the importance of service by volunteering at several organizations, including the local chapter of the Red Cross. He won an Alumni Impact Award for a project that trained health workers on the use of intermittent preventive therapy (IPTp) for the prevention of malaria among pregnant women in rural communities in Engugu State in 2016. He later created iphAE to sustain the gains of the intervention. His recent project provides assistance to Mother Louisa Charity Home to improve sanitation and health standards. This will prevent the spread of diseases and allow for children’s sustained care. He also started the "Mask-Up Enugu Campaign" to distribute masks to those who do not have access to them during COVID-19. Dr. Okonkwu was a 2009-2010 Fellow at Tulane University.
